NK Sport X Running is Dead

Pre-internet

As a kid, growing up in a small town an hour from Stockholm in the early 90’s I remember feeling that I was missing out on something. This was long before the internet age so finding out about new trends and getting your hands on the latest sneakers was hard work. At the time there was a mini NK in my hometown Västerås, half hidden in the corner of another department store. They didn’t carry any of the stuff I was interested in however. And frankly at that time neither did the real deal i.e. the impressive NK department store which opened in 1902 and remains located in the corner of Hamngatan and Regeringsgatan in Stockholm. So I’d do most of my hunts for the latest Nike Air Max’s while visiting relatives in New York.

Staying put

Years later I ended up in Stockholm working at an investment bank that had offices on top of the NK department store. This was in the early 2000’s. At the time I had developed a taste for a somewhat more mature version of street wear that they still carry at Paul & Friends on the 2nd floor.

So several times per week I’d pop down during my lunch break and check out the latest t-shirts from Acne or Maison Kitsuné. I’ve moved on since. Office wise that is. NK has stayed put. In the very best sense of that word.

Renewal

This 118 year old still carries some of my favorite brands. And has managed to renew itself by adding a ton of new ones. Like Eytys, the sneaker brand that my former banker colleague from that office on top of NK once started with his old childhood friends. As of now they also carry the Scandinavian running apparel brand that was recently created by three dreamers, friends and dedicated runners: Running is Dead.

Long live running!
